With around 6 million cases of lice amongst children being reported each year, you have to wonder why these pesky critters won’t leave your children alone.
However, the truth is that lice infest your child’s scalp they’re the only ones who have more head-to-head contact than anyone.
Lice can transmit to any person. But children are more likely to catch it because they spend their day in close contact with other children. They also swap scarves, hats, gloves, brushes, earphones and many other hair accessories, which allows for easy travel from one head to the other.
This is why children get lice relatively easily and frequently.
Naturally, girls are more likely to get lice than boys, mainly because they have longer hair, which makes it easier for lice to camouflage. Not to mention that children don’t use any hair products and parents try their best to keep their children neat and clean. And though this benefits your child’s health, it also creates a cleaner path for the lice to roam in i.e. the clean scalp. And that causes them to spread.
In many cases, people don’t feel any itchiness at all, even when they have lice.
So if there is indeed an outbreak of lice, it’s important that you keep an eye on your child’s scalp. Ask them to tell you straight away if they feel something moving in their hair. Also ask them to tell you if they feel a persistent itch. That is what gives it away.
Use a nit comb and check behind the ears and at the nape of the neck for lice and nits, since those are the hotspots. You’ll likely find the nits attached to the hair shaft. If you do find lice, do not under any circumstances use over-the-counter products.
Ineffective and harmful to the user’s health, these treatments have no outcome since the newer strain of lice has become resistant to these chemicals now. Your best chance at getting rid of lice is by getting natural treatment!
