On an episode of “Inside the Actors Studio” with host, James Lipton, Dave Chappelle was put through the ringer, made to answer a series of routine questions that close the show. One of these was “what turns you off?”—to which the legendary comedian, after a few profound moments of contemplation, emphatically responded: “hair”.
Contrary to what you may think, Chappelle—despite his shaved head—doesn’t have an aversion to all things hairy. His response, however, does capture the strong association between hair and hygiene that many of us make; whereby finding hair in all the wrong places triggers a universalreaction aptly described by “ew”.
If you’re a working professional, you understand already the importance of looking presentable at the workplace. While this may not necessarily refer to makeup and designer wear—it does mean maintaining an “appropriate dress code” (depending on your organization) as well as your personal hygiene.
Some organizations, however, are a bit more stringent about their hair hygiene standards—and for good reason!
Let’s take a look at a few:
So, you want to be a movie star? Maybe a runway model? Perhaps you’re more of a stylist or a publicist?
Whatever your line of work within the fashion and entertainment industry, know that your hygiene can make the difference between top and flop. You may not believe in appearances, but you’re working in an industry that feeds on it—which means you’ll be working closely with actors, theater workers, supermodels, TV personalities who wish to surround themselves with people who understand the importance of “maintenance” in every sense of the word.
Think you could step into a Beverly Hills salon with a raging lice infestation?
Yeah, we didn’t think so.
Nothing says “gross” like finding hair in your food!
Whether you’re a waitress, bartender, barista or chef—if a customer reports finding a hair anywhere on their plate, you’ll be under fire for not adhering to strict hygiene standards. It could be an accident, or a simple oversight—but not maintaining hair hygiene means making another meal from scratch or compensating by offering dessert or the entire meal on the house (which could come out of your paycheck).
Perhaps nowhere is the concept of hygiene as important as it is in the healthcare sector. Nurses, physicians, even interns and receptionists—all are required to maintain cleanliness in every sense of the word in a healthcare facility, lest they’re discharged despite their qualifications for simply breaking the code of hygiene.
If you’re a talented working professional with big hopes and dreams; don’t let something as small as hair affect your career.
Lice infestation is an incredibly common condition, which could afflict anyone at any time.
