Super Lice – What Is So Super About Them?

July 22, 2017

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but lice removal has become doubly difficult, with super lice on the rise.

Experienced parents (aka who have experienced feverish lice outbreaks and came out relatively victorious) will nod their heads and say they saw this coming a long time ago.

A lot has been done wrong by the generation that came before us…including lice removal with OTC lice removal shampoos and chemical based products. It’s no wonder why lice have now become resistant to permethrins and pyrethroids—two major insecticides used by manufacturers in lice removal solutions.

But what in hell are super lice, and can we treat and remove this parasitic menace? Following are some facts about super lice that you should know about:

Fact #1: Increased Resistance against OTC Lice Removal Products

Recent study conducted on this subject has discovered majority of head lice in the United States are impervious to the wily charms of OTC lice removal products. What does this mean? Parents who previously relied on over-the-counter treatments will have to find another way to vanquish the tiny parasites.

Out of 48 states, lice in 43 states are resistant to lice removal products that contain the main bug killing ingredient pyrethroid, which is a type of insecticide. Lice removal shampoos and solutions containing permethrin also come under the same category.

Fact #2: Rid and Nix Entirely Ineffective In Killing Nits

Let us forget the ineffectiveness of OTC lice removal products for a minute. Even then, these toxic chemical based solutions won’t help in your fight against lice infestations. These so-called lice killing solutions aren’t ovicidal i.e. they have zero affect on lice eggs.

What is the point of spending hours combing out dead lice when nits are left to hatch and begin the process all over again? Each nit must also be combed out manually, with a proper metal nit comb!

Fact #3: Head Lice Have a Short yet Dangerous Life Cycle

Lice are essentially blood sucking parasites, unable to survive without a host or mode of sustenance. In the case of humanus pediculous capitis or the common head louse, we are the host and constant supply of blood and warmth.

Head lice have a very short life cycle, only of 21 days! Perhaps this is why lice are stubborn and resilient creatures, able to sprout again even if a single nit or live lice is missed. Parents often used special shampoos and solutions, assuming this will keep the problem under control yet the opposite is more likely to happen.

Lice have survived for millennia by simply evolving and adapting to hostile head lice treatments (aka OTC lice removal chemicals). Effective head lice removal doesn’t include use of chemicals but a more archaic and manual lice treatment solution.
