Why Mayonnaise Lice Treatment Does NOT Work and NEITHER It’s a Good Idea

November 2, 2017

But there are many parents who have used it.

And, that resource available online, also agrees with the efficacy of mayonnaise lice treatment.

So, why do we think it does not work and neither it is a good idea to cover your head in mayonnaise?

To explain that, let’s look at the idea behind the “claim” that mayonnaise can help you get rid of lice.

Let’s Suffocate Lice!

The treatment method works—apparently—by suffocating the lice found on one’s scalp. Mayonnaise get into a louse’s breathing system and chokes it, resulting in its death.

Fair enough, for theoretically it makes sense.

But the practical evidence does not seem to suggest so.

Evidence from Established Authorities

Journal of Pediatric Nursing states:

“None of the home remedy products we surveyed was an effective means of louse control.”

They tested mayonnaise, petroleum jelly and any other household products — otherwise claimed to be effective lice treatments.

Further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also states the same:

“The CDC does not have clear scientific evidence to determine if suffocation of head lice with mayonnaise, olive oil, margarine, butter, or similar substances is an effective form of treatment.”

And, even if for an instance, we decide to go against what CDC and Journal of Pediatric Nursing have to say, what about those eggs (nits)—how can you suffocate eggs to death?

And without killing those eggs you can never eliminate lice infestation.

Clearly,

Mayonnaise lice treatment does not work!

Some of our readers might find our stance a little bit stern – we humbly agree. But there is a reason for that, which we would like to share with you all.

A Toddler Dies

Massachusetts toddler dies during head lice treatment

It was the news, run by CBSN on February 5, 2015.

Parents covered their 18-month old child’s scalp in mayonnaise and placed a shopping bag over her head. They left the toddler sleeping peacefully. While unattended, the bag slid down on her face and suffocated her to death.

Yes, the mayonnaise was not at fault but the protocols entailing the treatment method were. There were enough elements involved in the treatment that increased the probability of such an accident.

Surely,

Mayonnaise lice treatment is not a good idea!

This piece was not intended to make you feel worried; it was just to educate you that when it comes to exercising a step that concerns the subject of health, domestic tips and home remedies are better left avoided.
